Mike Edson is Raising Money for a Children's Cause: Notate that on your Calendars!
In 2016, very shortly after moving to Phoenix, I signed on for this run as something fun to do on a Saturday morning. The course is close to my home, and it's for a good cause, so it was an easy decision.
The day of the race, I arrived early as I hadn't picked up my packet the day before - early pickup locations were not convenient. So I was at the start line well in advance of gun time. As is the case with charity events, the sponsor started things off with a few words of thanks, and how the money would support their programs. Yeah, yeah - blah blah blah. I get it, I know it's a good cause.
Then they brought out the patients to tell their stories. Anyone who knows me well knows that little kids are somewhere on my list of favorite things probably just below dental work without anesthesia. (I mean, except YOUR kids, dear reader - they are wonderful. It's everyone else's kids I'm referring to here.) Absolutely gut-wrenching stuff as these wonderfully optimistic kids told the group about their horrible sounding, super rare cancer that they were sure they would beat with the help of the good folks at Phoenix Children's Hospital. The Grinch's small heart may have grown 3 sizes that day. (Yes, I know an enlarged heart is a dangerous medical condition not to be taken lightly. I'm talking about metaphorical heart, dumbass.)
This year I've registered in advance to help with their fundraising cause. If you're in a position to contribute, that would be really cool. Thanks.
