Q: What is Miles That Matter?

A: Miles That Matter is a sports training and fundraising program for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. We offer a half and full marathon, triathlon, and cycling ride. Our program provides experienced coaches to help participants reach their goals.  

Q: What events are part of Miles That Matter?
A: The three primary Miles That Matter events are:

  1. P.F. Chang’s Rock n’ Roll Marathon (January)
  2. Holualoa Companies 25th El Tour de Mesa (April)
  3. Nathan’s Tempe Triathlon (September)

Or choose your own race to compete in.

Q: I'm not an experienced runner, biker, or tri-athlete? Can I still participate?

A: You bet! The training program is designed to gradually increase skill and fitness levels for all persons from beginner to expert. The professional coaching and training provided by racelab LLC will guide you and motivate you to complete the program successfully.

Q: Who will I be running for?

A: A child at Phoenix Children’s Hospital needs your help today. You’ll be running for one, a Most Valuable Patient (MVP), who will encourage and motivate you along the way. And as you share his or her story (and personalized trading card) with family and friends, they will be inspired to help too.  Members and MVP honor patients are also invited to the annual “Running the Good Race” Miles That Matter kickoff party, where racers and patients will have the opportunity to meet in person.

Q: Can I select my own MVP?
A: Yes, you may select the patient you wish to race for.

Q: Can I run, tri, cycle, or walk in honor of someone I know?
A: Absolutely. Many of us know someone personally who has been a patient at PCH.

Q: How do I train for an endurance event?
A: Each Miles That Matter participant is given a training schedule from racelab LLC geared to helping you get from the beginning to the finish line. The training schedule will gradually progress in time and mileage to allow your body to acclimate to the demands of preparing for an endurance event. Clinics on nutrition, fitness, equipment and more are also available to help boost your Miles That Matter experience.

Q: When will I start training?
A: Training typically starts 6 to 8 weeks prior to the event.

Q: Will I have to train on my own as well?
A: Yes, you will have to train on your own during the week. Miles That Matter Group Training through racelab LLC will be held weekly. This is a great chance to interact with other participants and get answers to your questions.

Q: How do I choose my own race?
A: Miles That Matter is not limited to the three signature races. You can race for one of our MVPs in any race of your choosing. Just go to our make your own event section and set up your fundraising team or page there.  There's no required minimum fundraising amount for the make your own events and you are responsible for your own training and registration fees.

Q: How soon can I start fundraising?
A: Immediately. Just set up your personal fundraising page and begin asking family and friends to support you.

Q: When does all my money need to be turned in?
A: We ask that you have at least 75% ($750) of your total raised one month prior to the race you are participating in.  

Q: What if I don't meet the $1,000 fundraising goal?
A: If you have not reached 75% of your goal one month prior to the race  the race, please call (602) 933-2620 to discuss options.

Q: What if I am having trouble raising the minimum fundraising goal?
A: Don't give up. Remember, we are committed to helping you reach you goal. Let us know if you are struggling and together we can come up with some new ideas and opportunities.

Q: What are the most successful ways to fundraise?
A: Developing a good plan and starting early is the key to success, you will find that raising the funds is easier than you think. Usually 70% of all funds donated are raised through the letter writing campaign and online fundraising. Your online fundraising webpage is set up when you register - all you have to do is personalize and email it to your contacts. Several other ideas include parties, coin boxes, garage sales, silent and live auctions, corporate fundraising and more! The Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation is available to assist with your fundraising to help you reach your goal throughout the season.

Q: Where does my money go?
A: All money raised by Miles That Matter is will be used to provide the most urgent care for the patients and families we serve.

Q: When can I set up my personal fundraising webpage?
A: As soon as you register.

Q: Will the fundraising webpage be a secure website for donations?
A: Yes, they use VeriSign.

Q: Are donations tax deductible?
A: Yes, checks must be made payable to Phoenix Children's Hospital or sponsors can donate online. Donors will receive an acknowledgment letter from Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Q: What do I receive as a Miles That Matter participant?
A: Each participant receives:

  • Professional coaching
  • Weekly team trainings
  • 4-5 month training schedule
  • Clinics on gear, injury prevention, nutrition, equipment and more
